What we learned from exhibiting in Thailand Lab 2022.

Hi readers. Good day!

Greeting from us, Showa Denko Singapore. The other day, we exhibited our SHODEX™ HPLC Column booth at Thailand Lab International 2022, a laboratory related exhibition, for three days. This year, I have a lot of good experiences with users at our booth. With this exhibition, I made some new discoveries about lab users, and good tips about exhibiting at big events. Let’s go through together what I have learnt this time.

Tips for hot booth

  • A focus topic

Mostly, a popular booth is a booth that focuses on only an attractive topic. In Thailand, this time it was popular with a Cannabis-themed booth. Cannabis has become a trending topic for Thai people since the regulations eased for a while. I can easily see it anywhere from the roadside to a specialist shop. Our local partner who also exhibited the Cannabis booth (about analysis equipment 😊) said almost 200 companies have started manufacturing it so far. No surprise that Cannabis could be an eye-catching topic for booth display this year.

  • Interactivity

Also, the hot booths mostly have an interactive display or activities with customers, i.e. moving display, games and so on. Definitely, you can adapt this concept to your product/business showcase too.

Customer’s experience

At this time, about 100 users visited our booth. After full 3 days, I found some interesting habits of each customer. I think it could be useful for your business too.

  • 90% of the participants were women

From my working experience in Thailand, 90% of the staff/customers or even your colleagues will be women. Also, this time women are the majority among lab users.

  • Women look at the table, while men look at the posters.

In the most of the movements, women tend to look at the display table first. Maybe it is eye-level or a more eye-catching display on the table. While, men’s first look will be on the poster at the booth panels at an unreachable distance.

FYI, we have touchable product mock-up and cute Japanese dolls at the table display, while more academic posters are black-themed and quite far in distance.

  • Fewer visitors come inside the booth.

The nature of the visitors only walk past the booth. We found that only 5% of visitors came inside the booth. So, we have learned that the booth panels (or posters) with too many fonts might not be useful for both us and visitors.

Based on this hypothesis, we made improvements such as adding more tables and increasing the number of displays (more colorful displays for eye-catching) from the second day onwards. As a result, the number of visitors increased and we were able to gather more information and various opinions about our product too.


At this exhibition, we achieved the following:

  • Get the voice of the user
  • Explore market trends
  • Get hints for future marketing plans
  • Notes to improve next year’s exhibition

Through this experience, I would like to take on new challenges next year,

  • To have special feature in our booth
  • Fewer fonts to make visitors understand our product/service better
  • Novelty goods for women

Dehydration process by using Molecular Sieve in Bioethanol world

Hi all,

Recently, I could not help but really hear people screaming about the price surge on gasoline. We might say it is over the moon.

In the past, we have forecasted that someday gasoline will be short in supply and price surge. And, Bioethanol has been developed for the solution.

Bioethanol industry is a growing industry in many countries such as United States, Brazil and also Thailand.

99.9% of high purity ethanol is required to be our high qualified fuel of global standard. In order to achieve that, Molecular Sieve is essential to remove moisture from crude ethanol and increase its purity from 99% to 99.9%.

Generally, this dehydration process is in the final part of bioethanol production. Bioethanol will go through 2 columns containing molecular sieve in dehydration facilities. And, the following image is simple diagram how the bioethanol is being purified and dehydrated.

Medicinal Cannabis is a potential market for HPLC!

Hello! Greeting from Showa Denko Singapore.

Last week, we just finished exhibiting our SHODEX™ (HPLC column) at Thailand LAB for three days. This was my third time to experience the SHODEX exhibition, and I made some new discoveries this time. I learned a lot, so I would like to share what I felt.

Thailand LAB INTERNATIONAL is the annual exhibition about laboratory exhibitions. It is the biggest event for both buyer and seller to find each other for business matching or networking.

This year, after a long while, I participated again, and found a hot topic to share with you all

Cannabis is everywhere

At the exhibition, there were cannabis related topics at several booths, which means many companies are going for this business. As a Japanese, I was honestly surprised that they were actively promoting this. At a Cannabis-centered booth, I asked how much potential there was, and according to them, nearly 200 companies have started manufacturing it so far. That was a much larger market than I expected!!

Also, I also got some chance to stroll around Bangkok. And, there really are many signs of green Cannabis leaves at café, restaurant, roadside stalls etc. They are literally everywhere! This is very surprising for me, as you can easily find it, whereas it is still prohibited in Japan and many countries.

From analysis perspective

Medicinal cannabis requires high level of control and we received information that HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) is used for analysing in pre-post production process. HPLC is used to detect heavy metals in fertilizer and also able to check the concentration of Cannabinoids group in the quality assurance process. Polymer-based HPLC columns are able to analyse heavy metals, so we would like to work with our local partner to go further in this popular industry.

Mostly, the heavy metals come from the cultivation process, so we are looking for these 4 compounds in the fertilizer.

  3. Cadmium
  4. Mercury

We will work on the application to find out how Shodex™ polymer-based HPLC column can support this Cannabis industry.

SHODEX: Better Multivitamins Analysis with Polymer Columns ODP, NH2P

1) Fat-Soluble Vitamins
Asahipak ODP-50 4E [USP L67] reversed phase mode was used for the simultaneous analysis of fat-soluble vitamins. Good calibration curves were obtained for them.

1. Vitamin K3 1.5μg/mL
2. Vitamin A 1.0IU/mL(0.3μg/mL)
3. Vitamin A acetate 0.5IU/mL(1.9μg/mL)
4. Vitamin D2 13.2IU/mL(0.3μg/mL)
5. Vitamin D3 13.2IU/mL(0.3μg/mL)
6. Vitamin E acetate 2.4μg/mL
7. Vitamin E 2.5μg/mL
8. Vitamin K1 2.4μg/mL

Column : Shodex Asahipak ODP-50 4E (4.6 mm I.D. x 250 mm) 
Eluent : CH3CN/CH3OH = 50/50
Flow rate : 0.6 mL/min
Detector : UV (280 nm)
Column temp. : 30 °C

2) Food Containing Vitamins
Vitamins in food were analyzed using RSpak DE-413 [USP L71), a column for reversed phase chromatography.

(Sample pretreatment)
– Dissolve 80mg of the food containing vitamins in 12mL of the eluant (A).
– Pass through a 0.45μm filter before injecting into HPLC.

Sample : 20 μL
1. Vitamin C 145μg/mL
2. Vitamin B6 21.2μg/mL
3. Vitamin B2 7.3μg/mL

Column : Shodex RSpak DE-413 (4.6 mm I.D. x 150 mm) 
Eluent : (A); 1/30M Potasium phosphate buffer (pH 6.8) / CH3CN = 98/2
               (B); H2O / CH3CN = 50/50
                Gradient: 0 min to 4 min, 100% (A), 4 min to 15 min, 100% (A) to 30% (A), After 15 min, 30% (A)
Flow rate : 0.6 mL/min
Detector : UV (254 nm)
Column temp. : 35 °C

3) Water-Soluble Vitamins
To those who are not satisfied with RP mode for water-soluble vitamins, NH2P-50 4E [USP L82] offers ion exchange chromatography. Six water-soluble vitamins were separated within 5 minutes.

[Note] This analysis requires column equilibration.
For column equilibration: First introduce 60 mM phosphoric acid at 0.5 mL/min for 2 hours, and then switch to the eluent.

Sample : 20 μL
1. Vitamin B6 50μg/mL
2. Nicotinamide 10μg/mL
3. Vitamin B12 10μg/mL
4. Nicotinic acid 10μg/mL
5. Folic acid 10μg/mL
6. Vitamin C 10μg/mL

Column : Shodex Asahipak NH2P-50 4E (4.6 mm I.D. x 250 mm) 
Eluent : 40 mM H3PO4 aq./CH3CN = 45/55
Flow rate : 1.0 mL/min

Molecular Sieve: Showa Denko Group Technology Supports Vehicle Safety

Driving is exciting, but the brakes gets you to your destination safely.

Brakes are vital for safety in transportation.
The good news is Showa Denko Group’s Molecular Sieve technology can enhance its function. 
This time we introduce composition of brake pad and the technology used in it.

1)About brake pad
There are three basic movements of a car: cruising, turning, stopping. Among these functions, stopping is the utmost important for safety. The brake is responsible for stopping and its function is to slow and stop the car. Brake pad is one of the most important parts of braking. It is mainly used in a car or motorcycle.

2)How the brakes stop the movement
When you need to slow down or stop when driving, you can do so by stepping on the brake pedal. When the pedal is pressed, the master cylinder is activated and hydraulic pressure is generated by the brake oil in response to the pressing force.
The hydraulic pressure is transmitted to the wheel cylinder of each wheel, through brake pipe and brake hose. The pistons in the wheel cylinders push the brake pads against the disc rotor, which slows down the vehicle.

3)Structure of brake pads
The brake pad is essential part to firmly stop a vehicle.
There are 10 ~ 20 kinds of raw materials combined in the brake pad. These raw materials are blended and divided into three categories based on their roles:
1. Binders are used to solidify the raw materials and ensure strength. Currently, phenolic resin is mainly used.
2. Reinforcing materials is responsible for ensuring the strength of the friction material. Various types of organic and inorganic fibers are used, such as aramid and metallic fibers.
3. Friction modifiers are mainly used to adjust the strength of the effect of friction materials.
It is designed to improve or stabilize the friction strength. Various raw materials such as lubricants, organic fillers, inorganic fillers, grinding materials, and metal powders are blended as needed.

4)Idea for improving the performance of brake pads
The brake pads wear out little by little as they rub against the discs. But even for safety reasons, it is inconvenient if you had to replace the brake pads frequently to drive your vehicle with a peace of mind.
Therefore, brake pads are also required to have durability and wear resistance. In the case of automobiles, Japanese brake pads are designed to run – under normal condition – without replacement for at least three years before the first vehicle inspection. In order to achieve this, they must be resistant to wear.
After driving for a long period, the friction material such as rubber or resin will decompose and gasify beyond the heat resistance temperature. And when it enters between the brake rotor and the material, the gas film will act like a lubricant and reduce the friction force.

MOLECULAR SIEVES as friction material can prevent this phenomenon by accelerating the contact decomposition reaction and remove the liquid decomposition generated due to thermal decomposition on the sliding surface. This is how the life of the brake pads is prolonged.

Bio-CO2 For Greener Earth (Part 4)

Looking into ASEAN region, Thailand is a major producer of bio-ethanol in Southeast Asia.
The dependence on energy imports has been increasing with the country’s economic development.
Therefore, government of Thailand is promoting self-sufficient energy by encouraging ethanol production to ensure a stable supply of energy.

While conducting sales of our adsorbents (Zeolites) for dehydration equipment in the growing ethanol industry. 
We found that a large amount of unused carbon dioxide has been released to the atmosphere every year.
Based on hearings from customers, about 300 million tons of carbon dioxide are generated as by-product from ethanol fermentation process.
We believe that effective utilization of this carbon dioxide could contribute to: the reduction of greenhouse gases and the cost of bioethanol.

When we analyzed the quality of this carbon dioxide, we found that the crude gas had a high purity of 99.5%, which is finer to other sources like oil refining.
Although further refining is required, capital investment would be relatively low.
So, we could deliver reasonable price and high-quality carbon dioxide to customers.

Our investigation and study showing that the concept is becoming feasible. 
Next step: we are looking for partners who interested to carry out this project together.

Global warming, our breath. Many readers may have a bad impression of carbon dioxide. 
But on the other hand, carbon dioxide is also essential to our lives
Carbon dioxide is used as a foaming agent for carbonated drinks such as soda and ‘chuhai’ (“shōchū highball”). 
It is also used for dry-ice for cooling in-flight meals, ice cream and frozen foods.

Recently, carbon dioxide has been playing an active role in beauty and health fields, such as lotions containing carbon dioxide.
In the industrial field, it is used for rubber molding blasting and welding.
Now you know that carbon dioxide is critical to our lives.
Unfortunately, many of these are made from the by-products of oil refining.

If these products are of plant origin and can contribute to the prevention of global warming, consumers will be excited.

Then, what can we do in order to bring the product to market? 
In the next part, we will explain in detail about our startup activities in Thailand.

While considering a new project, we wanted to contribute to the prevention of global warming through our business.

I got an information from a friend in Indonesia about a company that uses carbon dioxide from bioethanol production by-product, for drinks and dry ice.
That was a hint for this project startup.
In ASEAN countries, many companies are producing bioethanol for fuel, from sugar cane and cassava as a policy to get out of dependence on oil. Demand for carbonated drinks is also growing.

So what are the issue for these industries?

Many beverage manufacturers use carbon dioxide for raw material as by-product of oil and natural gas.
Due to spread of COV-19, suppliers are forced to decrease their operation rate, and supply/demand balance of CO2 is tighten in the world.
Beverage manufactures are thriving to find supply during this pandemic.
The risk is threatening the industry, and manufacturers are trying to find new sources for CO2
On the other hand, the development of eco-friendly products is being actively promoted as a trend in the world. 
In fact, beverage manufacturers in Europe and the United States are also actively incorporating bio-fieondly and eco-friendly raw materials.

While proceeding our study, we focus on Thailand market.

Thailand is one of the world-ranked Ethanol producer and beverage manufacturers, mainly rely on CO2 from refineries industry.
In addition, a lot of CO2 is emitted from bio-ethanol fermentation process and Thai government wants to reduce total emission of CO2
The change of purchasing policy in beverage manufacturers occurred in Europe and United States is expected to happen in Thailand as “new normal”. 
So, I thought we can provide value to this industry by making effective use of CO2 from bioethanol. 
Therefore, we want to you to be prepared of ‘new normal’ in Thailand, which could happen in near future, by commercializing eco-friendly CO2 and building a stable supply system.

We believe our Bio-CO2 project would be the solution for this industry!
