Vitamins in food were analyzed using RSpak DE-413 [USP L71), a column for reversed phase chromatography.

– Dissolve 80mg of the food containing vitamins in 12mL of the eluant (A).
– Pass through a 0.45μm filter before injecting into HPLC.

3) Water-Soluble Vitamins
To those who are not satisfied with RP mode for water-soluble vitamins, NH2P-50 4E [USP L82] offers ion exchange chromatography. Six water-soluble vitamins were separated within 5 minutes.

[Note] This analysis requires column equilibration.
For column equilibration: First introduce 60 mM phosphoric acid at 0.5 mL/min for 2 hours, and then switch to the eluent.

Showa Denko Installs Additional Lines to Produce Aluminum Heat Radiators for xEVs

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) (Tokyo: 4004) has decided to double Oyama Plant’s capacity to produce aluminum heat radiators for power modules (PMs)*1 to be installed in electrified vehicles (xEVs) including battery electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, in order to respond to an increase in demand for aluminum heat radiators for PMs. SDK has started installation of the additional production line whose start-up of operation is scheduled to be at the beginning of 2022.

PMs are important parts of xEVs and contribute to the improvement in the performance of xEVs. For example, PMs contribute to extension of cruising range and improvement in fuel economy of cars. PMs are usually installed into limited spaces of xEVs. Therefore, heat radiators for PMs must be small, be designed to allow various installation methods, and have high energy efficiency and large heat dissipation capacity.

Aluminum heat radiators for PMs produced by SDK adopt direct vacuum brazing*2 between insulated substrates and other parts including aluminum fins produced by SDK. Therefore, SDK’s aluminum heat radiators for PMs are small, have large heat dissipation capacity, and allow free design of coolant pipes, thereby having a multiplicity of uses. SDK started to produce aluminum heat radiators for PMs in 2019. SDK’s aluminum heat radiators are put into PMs by a large PM manufacturer in Japan, and those PMs are installed in xEVs assembled by various car manufacturers operating in Japan and other Asian countries.

Backed by the global movement toward realization of carbon neutral society, the automobile industry is accelerating its shift toward xEVs. Therefore, the market for aluminum heat radiators for PMs is expected to expand further. SDK will develop and produce smaller high-performance aluminum heat radiators for PMs on the basis of its long-time fostered aluminum-alloy design technology, aluminum processing technology and power-module evaluation technology, and provide customers with solutions for their problems, thereby expanding its aluminum specialty components business.

*1. Power module (PM) is a part of electronic device. It consists of several power semiconductor chips, and supplies electronic power to an electronic device. PM with good efficiency improves xEVs’ performance.
*2. Vacuum brazing joints parts without melting basic materials. Vacuum brazing is suitable for jointing of precision parts because inside of the furnace is vacuum and fine control of inside temperature is possible.

Tempo.co news (15 July 2021) reported the Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency or BPOM has finally granted the Emergency Use Authorization for anti-parasitic drug ivermectin as the therapeutic drug to support the Covid-19 treatment. […] The Circular was inked by the BPOM head No. HK.02.02.1.2.07.21.281 of 2021 on the second amendment to the BPOM Decree No. HK.02.02.1.2.11.20.1126 of 2020. Besides ivermectin, the circular noted seven other therapeutic drugs for Covid-19 treatment, viz. Remdesivir, Favipiravir, Oseltamivir, Immunoglobulin, Ivermectin, Tocilizumab, Azithromycin, and Dexamethasone.

Azithromycin is a 15-membered ring macrolide antibiotic. According to the United States Pharmacopeia and the National Formulary (USP 39-NF 34**), analysis of azithromycin should be carried out with a column filled with L67 packing material and meets following requirements. The Asahipak ODP-50 4E confirmed the requirements were met.

 Relative standard deviation (RSD): ≤ 1.1%
 Tailing factor of azithromycin: 0.8 to 1.5

BBC News (7 May 2021) reported that India has begun distributing a new locally developed drug to treat Covid-19 symptoms.
Authorities have approved 2-DG and it is to be first used in hospitals across the capital, Delhi. According to a government statement, it “will be of immense benefit to the people suffering” from Covid-19.

2-DG or 2-Deoxy-D-glucose is a glucose molecule which has the 2-hydroxyl group replaced by hydrogen, and it is not metabolized by glycolysis. D-Glucal is the starting material for the synthesizing of 2-Deoxy-D-glucose. The separation of 2-Deoxy-D-glucose, D-Glucal and glucose was made by Shodex HILICpak VG-50 4E column which is a polymer-based amino column.

Showa Denko Develops WelQuick™ to Bond Dissimilar Materials Quickly

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) (Tokyo: 4004) has developed WelQuick™, a film-type binding material to bond dissimilar materials together, such as bonding between resins and metals, with excellent quickness and strength. SDK has already started to provide potential customers with samples of WelQuick™.

In recent years, manufacturing industry’s requirements for materials such as lightness, heat-resistance and strength have been advanced so much that almost no single material can meet such sophisticated needs. Therefore, there has been a progress in introduction of composite structure into components, in which dissimilar materials such as resins and metals are bound together. This movement is called “multi-materialization“. There are many methods to bond dissimilar materials, such as bonding with liquid adhesives or hot-melt adhesives, and mechanical fastening with bolts. Though manufacturers demand simple, easy and timesaving bonding process while securing enough adhesive strength. However, simultaneous achievement of simplicity and adhesiveness has been difficult.

WelQuick™, which has been developed by SDK, is a film-type adhesive component, and eliminates the process to apply liquid components which was necessary process for reactive adhesives. Therefore, WelQuick™ is easy to handle, and shortens bonding time to a few seconds by utilizing the phase change*1 between solid and liquid, while bonding with conventional adhesives takes dozens of minutes.

WelQuick™ Features:

  1. Can bond various resins (PC, PBT, PA, PPS, PMMA, ABS etc.) and metals (Al, Fe, Cu, etc.) in resin–metal, resin–resin, and metal–metal combinations.
  2. Can achieve shear adhesive strength*2 of more than 10MPa*3 with more than 40 combinations of base materials.
  3. Wide variety of welding methods: ultrasonic welding which realizes high-speed welding, electromagnetic induction welding which is suitable for metals, and heat welding which is suitable for various materials.
  4. Can be stored at room temperature for long periods.
  5. Does not produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when welded. Thus WelQuick™ lowers the burden on the environment.

The edge of the PCBN tool is made by integrated sintering CBN particles together with a binder (metal, ceramics) on a cemented carbide substrate at high temperature and high pressure (1200 ° C or higher, 40,000 to 60,000 atm).

Analysis of such additives is important for the quality control purposes in the polymer production. Those additives are typically analyzed by liquid chromatography and gas chromatography after pretreating the sample by extraction and concentration. The treatment steps are often complex and time consuming. On the other hand, by using the gel permeation chromatography (GPC), a polymer sample dissolved in an appropriate solvent can directly be analyzed. It separates the additives from polymers, and thus a simple and rapid detection can be expected.

Simultaneous LC/MS Analyses of Phosphorylated Saccharides

Phosphorylated saccharides take the important role as intermediates in various metabolic pathways of animals. For example, during glycolysis process, glucose is first converted to glucose-6-phosphate, then to other phosphorylated saccharides (such as fructose-6-phosphate and fructose-1,6-bisphosphate) and finally to pyruvate to produce ATP, the energy source of cell processing. Through glycogenolysis process, glucose-1-phosphate is produced from breakdown process of glycogen branches. In this process, glucose-6-phosphate is also produced as an isomer, and the product goes through a glycolysis process via different pathway. High sensitive analysis of phosphorylated saccharides in vivo is important for understanding the biological phenomena and early detection and treatment of the related diseases. One such case is glycogenosis, which stores abnormal amounts of glycogen in the body, and is possibly related to genetic glycogen enzymes deficiencies. Newborn glucose-6- phosphate concentration monitoring is considered an effective tool for the early detection of the disease.

In this application, we used a combination of Shodex™ HILICpak™ columns and LC/MS for simultaneous and high sensitive analysis of various phosphorylated saccharides without the use of ion-pair reagent nor derivatization.

Structure of perm
There are four bonds in hair.

  • Peptide bonds              : The bonds are hydrolyzed and broken by excessive alkaline agents and hydrogen peroxide.
  • Disulfide (S-S) bonds : The bonds are broken by reducing agents and recombined by oxidizing agents.
  • Ionic bonds                  :  The bonds are broken when the pH tends to alkaline and tightly bound when pH is weakly acidic(pH 4.5-5.5).
  • Hydrogen bonds         :  The bonds are broken when hair is wet and recombines when it dries.

Of the four bonds mentioned above, disulfide bonds, ionic bonds, and hydrogen bonds are broken to form hair’s permanent wave.

Our Technology

The surface of the hair is composed of a hydrophobic material called “cuticle”, and the inside is composed of a hydrophilic material called”cortex”. In order to break the aforementioned bonds, it is necessary to open this cuticle and allow the chemical to seep into the hair. For this reason, colorants and perms are usually alkaline.
Under alkaline state the cuticles open and allow the chemicals to penetrate, but at the same time, the proteins tend to flow out, which damages the hair and reduces its strength.

In other words, to avoid damage, you need a perm agent that is not alkaline.

This is why we developed the thiol compound “SPIERA™”, which has both hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties. Since it has both properties, so it easily soaks into the hair and there is no need to force the hair to become alkaline.

SPIERA™ can penetrate into hair in a weak acidic state and provide sufficient curling power.

Causes of sunburn
Sunburn is caused by UV irradiation and ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) occurred by it.

  1. UV irradiation

There are three types of UV irradiation, ranging from high energy to low energy.

  1. ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species)

ROS, which are changes in some of the oxygen taken into the body, originally play a role in protecting the body by attacking viruses and bacteria. However, if they increase too much, they become more aggressive and damage healthy cells. Excessive amounts of ROS can result in dry skin caused by weakening barrier function of skin. Cell transforming and weakening intercellular adhesion are the main cause of this.

This time we introduce composition of brake pad and the technology used in it.

1)About brake pad
There are three basic movements of a car: cruising, turning, stopping. Among these functions, stopping is the utmost important for safety. The brake is responsible for stopping and its function is to slow and stop the car. Brake pad is one of the most important parts of braking. It is mainly used in a car or motorcycle.

2)How the brakes stop the movement
When you need to slow down or stop when driving, you can do so by stepping on the brake pedal. When the pedal is pressed, the master cylinder is activated and hydraulic pressure is generated by the brake oil in response to the pressing force.
The hydraulic pressure is transmitted to the wheel cylinder of each wheel, through brake pipe and brake hose. The pistons in the wheel cylinders push the brake pads against the disc rotor, which slows down the vehicle.

3)Structure of brake pads
The brake pad is essential part to firmly stop a vehicle.
There are 10 ~ 20 kinds of raw materials combined in the brake pad. These raw materials are blended and divided into three categories based on their roles:
1. Binders are used to solidify the raw materials and ensure strength. Currently, phenolic resin is mainly used.
2. Reinforcing materials is responsible for ensuring the strength of the friction material. Various types of organic and inorganic fibers are used, such as aramid and metallic fibers.
3. Friction modifiers are mainly used to adjust the strength of the effect of friction materials.
It is designed to improve or stabilize the friction strength. Various raw materials such as lubricants, organic fillers, inorganic fillers, grinding materials, and metal powders are blended as needed.

4)Idea for improving the performance of brake pads
The brake pads wear out little by little as they rub against the discs. But even for safety reasons, it is inconvenient if you had to replace the brake pads frequently to drive your vehicle with a peace of mind.
Therefore, brake pads are also required to have durability and wear resistance. In the case of automobiles, Japanese brake pads are designed to run – under normal condition – without replacement for at least three years before the first vehicle inspection. In order to achieve this, they must be resistant to wear.

Recently, the effects of functional sugars in foods are gaining scientists’ interests, and thus their analytical methods are called for. This article will demonstrate the effectiveness of Shodex™ HILICpak™ VG-50 4E with its HILIC mode for the analysis of various functional sugars in foods. The eluent typically used in HILIC mode is a mixture of water and acetonitrile. And for some applications, the separation efficiency of the VG-50 4E can be improved by using a mixture containing water, acetonitrile, and methanol. Looking into ASEAN region, Thailand is a major producer of bio-ethanol in Southeast Asia.
The dependence on energy imports has been increasing with the country’s economic development.
Therefore, government of Thailand is promoting self-sufficient energy by encouraging ethanol production to ensure a stable supply of energy.

While conducting sales of our adsorbents (Zeolites) for dehydration equipment in the growing ethanol industry. 
We found that a large amount of unused carbon dioxide has been released to the atmosphere every year.
Based on hearings from customers, about 300 million tons of carbon dioxide are generated as by-product from ethanol fermentation process.
We believe that effective utilization of this carbon dioxide could contribute to: the reduction of greenhouse gases and the cost of bioethanol.

When we analyzed the quality of this carbon dioxide, we found that the crude gas had a high purity of 99.5%, which is finer to other sources like oil refining.
Although further refining is required, capital investment would be relatively low.
So, we could deliver reasonable price and high-quality carbon dioxide to customers.

Our investigation and study showing that the concept is becoming feasible. 
Next step: we are looking for partners who interested to carry out this project together.

I got an information from a friend in Indonesia about a company that uses carbon dioxide from bioethanol production by-product, for drinks and dry ice.
That was a hint for this project startup.
In ASEAN countries, many companies are producing bioethanol for fuel, from sugar cane and cassava as a policy to get out of dependence on oil. Demand for carbonated drinks is also growing.

So what are the issue for these industries?

Many beverage manufacturers use carbon dioxide for raw material as by-product of oil and natural gas.
Due to spread of COV-19, suppliers are forced to decrease their operation rate, and supply/demand balance of CO2 is tighten in the world.
Beverage manufactures are thriving to find supply during this pandemic.
The risk is threatening the industry, and manufacturers are trying to find new sources for CO2
On the other hand, the development of eco-friendly products is being actively promoted as a trend in the world.

The change of purchasing policy in beverage manufacturers occurred in Europe and United States is expected to happen in Thailand as “new normal”. 
So, I thought we can provide value to this industry by making effective use of CO2 from bioethanol. 
Therefore, we want to you to be prepared of ‘new normal’ in Thailand, which could happen in near future, by commercializing eco-friendly CO2 and building a stable supply system.

Not only our company, but the consumers also starting to consider more on eco-friendly production, less negative impact to world ecosystem. Therefore, we started the Bio-CO2 project to reduce greenhouse gases in this industry so that consumers themselves can feel they’re preserving mother nature.

Showa Denko to Acquire ILAG Group (Global Non-stick Coatings Manufacturer)

Showa Denko (SDK) has decided to acquire all shares in ILAG Industrielack AG, which leads the ILAG Group (ILAG), a specialty non-stick coating chemicals manufacturing company headquartered in Wangen, Switzerland, and signed a stock purchase and sale agreement with the current owners, a coalition of investors led by Helvetica Capital AG, a Swiss-based private equity firm.

Non-stick coating chemicals (NSCs) are used on consumer goods such as cookware, bakeware, and home electrical appliances, and also on industrial goods including automotive parts and other industrial equipment, for the purposes of preventing sticking of substances on their surfaces and supporting low friction and release during use. The global market for NSCs is put about JPY 130 billion (about $1.2 billion) a year (SDK’s estimate for 2019).

ILAG has the fourth largest share in the consumer-goods NSC market of worldwide operating companies, and the second largest share of this segment in Europe. Thus ILAG brand has strong presence in the European market. ILAG’s products are applied not only on consumer goods but also on industrial goods including automotive parts. ILAG exports its products manufactured in Switzerland to more than 50 countries. Moreover, ILAG has a production base in China, and consumer goods manufactured by ILAG’s customers in China are sold worldwide. On the other hand, GMM Group (GMM), a manufacturer of NSCs which SDK acquired in November 2016, has a large market share in NSC market for consumer goods in the US, and GMM’s main customers are major cookware/bakeware manufacturers based in the United States. Therefore, SDK is confident that ILAG and GMM are highly synergetic. For example, the two companies can play complimentary roles in terms of each company’s main markets in the world. After the acquisition of ILAG, annual sales figure of SDK’s NSC business will leap up to about $60 million (about JPY 6.6 billion). As a result, SDK’s NSC business will have strong presence and competitiveness in global market, especially in the field of consumer goods.

SDK’s functional polymer/monomer business sector manufactures and sells materials for coatings for various purposes, and have rich expertise in prescription and manufacturing of raw materials for high-performance coatings and evaluation of performance of those coatings. NSCs can be classified into three categories in terms of raw materials, namely, fluorinated-resin based, silicon based, and Sol-Gel based coatings. Therefore, SDK can offer optimum solutions to its own NSC business by taking advantage of its wide-ranging businesses, products and technologies as an integrated chemical company. Furthermore, in July 2019, SDK will establish the Coating Materials Department within the Company in order to manage its global NSC business including ILAG and GMM in an integrated manner.

The Showa Denko Group has a vision of becoming a corporate group of Koseiha businesses (individualized businesses), which can maintain profitability and stability at high levels in each business sector, and aims to make more than half of its business sectors Koseiha businesses by 2025. We will nourish our NSC business to become a Koseiha business having stable earning power by 2025, by realizing synergy effects of the acquisition, business expansion and global operation integrated with those of our existing businesses and technologies.

High polar compounds in pharmaceutical and food products are hardly retained under Reversed Phased mode, and to compromise the problem, pre-column derivatization or addition of ion-pair reagent to the eluent are often applied. Drawbacks are the complicated and time taking process of the derivatization and increase of background level caused by the ion-pair reagent residues on the column and the flow-lines.

However, Shodex™ HILICpack™ VG-50 2D, provides the solution with its advantageous analytical features when used under alkaline conditions. LC/MS with ammonia water/acetonitrile gradient elution is effective for good separation and high sensitivity analysis of various hydrophilic compounds. It can analyse saccharides, organic acids, and amino acid simultaneously, and able to monitor caffeine and water-soluble vitamins simultaneously. These can be achieved without using pre-column derivatization nor addition of ion-pairing reagent.

In this month’s newsletter, we introduce 2 new polymer-based columns for faster analysis, helping you & your team save time in your work and achieving better productivity.

Firstly, we have our new SUGAR SP0810 8C column, which is an 8.0 x 100mm, USP L34 equivalent column that is suitable for USP Sorbitol as well as Fast carbohydrates analysis. It composes of strong cation-exchange resin consisting of sulfonated cross-linked styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer in the lead (Pb) form, and allows for the analysis of sucrose, glucose, galactose, fructose within 5 minutes due to the short 100mm length. If you are looking for a short USP L34 column, please feel free to contact us.

Next up, we have our IEC SP-FT 4A column, a cation exchange column for UHPLC modified with sulfopropyl groups on a non-porous polymethacrylate base material, for the ultra-rapid analysis of proteins and the like. Five standard proteins can be separated within 50 seconds under high flow rate condition of 3.0 mL / min.

Analysis method of Aggregates and Additives in Antibody Drugs

Antibody drugs are important potent therapeutic drugs. Because of their highly specific targeting capacity to the cancer cells, it can cause less side effects. However, it is known that they may aggregate to form dimers and other larger aggregates during manufacturing process and/or during storage period. Therefore, monitoring of such aggregates are important for quality control (QC) purposes. Shodex™ PROTEIN LW-803 demonstrated its superior separation capability for IgG monomers and its aggregates. While, Shodex™ ODP2 HP-2D proved its separation capability of analyzing non-ionic surfactant, Tween, in the presence of IgG and NaCl, without the necessity of deproteinization nor desalting sample pretreatment.

Showa Denko to Launch New Shodex Analytical Columns

Showa Denko (SDK) will start selling next month, five new types of Shoedx high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns, namely, GPC HK-401, GPC HK-405 and GPC HK-HFIP404L packed columns for gel permeation chromatography (GPC: size exclusion chromatography [SEC] using organic solvents), as well as OHpak LB-805 packed column for gel filtration chromatography (GFC: SEC using aqueous solvents) and IEC SP-FT 4A packed column for ion exchange chromatography.
The five new analytical columns SDK developed this time feature more rapid analysis and higher sensitivity, which has been desired by analytical column users. SDK will continue meeting our customers’ needs by developing columns which enhances accuracy of analysis of target materials in a certain range of molecular weight, as well as those which enable analysis of hardly-soluble polymers and rapid analysis which is desired by users in the fields of medicine manufacturing and biochemistry, even with general analyzers.

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK)  announces that it has decided to acquire all shares of the GMM Group (GMM), a specialty non-stick coating chemicals manufacturing company headquartered in Hong Kong, China, and concluded a stock purchase and sale agreement with GMM.

Non-stick coating chemicals are materials to be coated on consumer goods including cookware, bakeware, and a variety of home electrical appliances, and on industrial goods including automotive parts and other industrial equipment, in order to prevent burning on, fouling, and soiling. The global market for non-stick coating chemicals is put at about JPY 120 billion a year (SDK’s estimate for 2016).

GMM operates non-stick coating chemicals business mainly in the field of consumer goods including cookware, bakeware, and various home electrical appliances. Its major customers are the leading cookware manufacturing companies in the US. GMM has been steadily increasing sales by making the most of the superb properties of its products and the power of the differentiated brands promoted jointly with GMM’s customers. GMM operates two manufacturing units in China and India, and can deliver its highly sophisticated engineering coatings directly to the local cookware manufacturing companies which are entrusted by major cookware makers to manufacture cookware to be sold in the US market. Cookware coated with GMM’s coatings is distributed via top US retailers. It has been estimated that approximately 40 million American families use cookware with GMM’s products on a daily basis.

TPNa™ (Vit E Derivative): Improves Eyes Dark Circles

Showa Denko (SDK) has discovered that its “TPNaTM” water-soluble vitamin E derivative, which SDK sells as an ingredient for cosmetics, is effective in improving dark circles around eyes. Following this discovery, SDK started shipment of TPNaTM as an ingredient for eye-care cosmetics.

Sodium dl-α-tocopheryl phosphate (TPNaTM) is a water-soluble vitamin E derivative with special chemical structure developed by SDK, and was approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare as a basis of quasi-drug to prevent rough dry skin in 2004. TPNaTM shows anti-inflammatory and moisture-retention effects as an ingredient of cosmetics, and is acclaimed very highly by our customers who manufacture cosmetics.

Dark circles around eyes, on which SDK found TPNaTM has an improving effect, can be categorized into three types: blue circles caused by low microcirculation, brown circles caused by accumulated blood-origin pigments, and black circles caused by slackening or depression of skin. Generally speaking, dark circles around eyes emerge as combination of these three types. Therefore, conventional cosmetics for dark-circle care have mainly been developed as mixtures of ingredients effective for each type of dark circles.

This time, SDK discovered that TPNaTM as a single ingredient can improve multiple types of dark circles through diverse approaches. TPNaTM shows promise of improvement on blue circles because it improves the circulation of the blood and metabolism. SDK also found that TPNaTM has increasing effect on enzymes which take part in breakdown and removal of pigments that cause brown circles. In a clinical test for four weeks, TPNaTM improved the L* parameters (numerical values indicating luminosities of skin colors) of the surfaces of lower eyelids in 82% of examinees.

SDK will exhibit this effectiveness of TPNaTM on dark circles at its corporate booths, one in the general meeting of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmic Chemists (IFSCC) to be held in Orlando, Florida from October 30th to November 2nd, and another in the “in-cosmetics Asia” exhibition to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from November 8th to 10th. SDK classifies its functional chemicals business including cosmetic materials business into “Growth-accelerating business” in its ongoing medium-term business plan, “Project 2020+,” and is promoting this business aggressively. SDK aims to expand its lineup of high-functioning cosmetic materials to meet customers’ expectations.

In this test, TPNaTM showed remarkable effect on dark circles around eyes.
Test method: We tested 1% TPNaTM skin cream on 21 Caucasian female examinees (31-49 years old) who have dark circles around eyes.
We applied 1% TPNaTM skin cream and a placebo skin cream to dark circles on examinees’ skin for four weeks, and measured changes in L* parameters (numerical values indicating luminosities of skin colors) of the parts of their skin with dark circles.
